Scholarship Program

Scholar awards for mid-career scientists

Who Its For

These awards are for tenure-track faculty members in their fifth to eighth year at American institutions, holding M.D. and/or Ph.D. degrees. The Scholar Award is designed to provide further support for scientists who have previously received a grant and are looking to advance their research to secure NIH R01 or other independent funding.

Funding Amount

Beginning in 2024, the Scholar Award provides $125,000 per year for a period of four years.

Good to Know

  • This program is by invitation only, with thirty institutions invited to submit two candidates each.
  • A successful grant award allows consideration for an invitation.
  • Proposals should be clearly understandable by scientific and non-scientific members of the Trustees, however they need not be in the detail required by the NIH for R01 grants.
  • In addition to the institution providing recognition of an internal selection process resulting in no more than two candidates, (this requires just a sentence that may be included in the letters), the proposal must be accompanied by letters of approval by the Dean of the medical school and/or another senior faculty member or members who can represent the support of the institution and who are acquainted with the qualifications of the applicant and the potential impact of his/her work.
  • A detailed budget breakdown is required, justifying the unique use of funds. (NOTE: The Foundation will not fund overhead) In addition, the proposal must detail the levels of support of any grants already available or pending.
  • Grants are restricted to domestic institutions
  • Funding for years 2, 3, and 4 is contingent upon approval of a yearly progress report by the applicant submitted via e-mail (1-2 page summaries of the work in progress). Failure to submit progress reports jeopardizes subsequent funding.
  • An award is made on the assumption that the recipient will use the funds for the purposes indicated in the application and in the same institution. If the recipient moves to another institution during the term of the grant, payments may or may not be continued, depending upon reconsideration by the Trustees of the Foundation upon receipt of a written request and justification for transfer of funds.
  • Unexpended funds will be returned to the Foundation at the end of the year for which a grant has been made, unless an extension is requested and justified and approved by the Trustees.
